BLAKE'S TRAINING TIPS

Do you own an areo helmet? Do you know when to use it and when not to use it?

Aero helmets are great. They lower the drag of an athlete moving through the air; this piece of equipment seems like an obvious choice, right? Well not always and here's why:

The helmets are built for speed, but unfortunately this means that they are almost zero ventilation. While this is necessary for it's advantage to work, it can also create a portable oven on hot days. The body cannot cool itself properly at higher intensities if it is warm and the head is covered. What results is a rising of the athletes core temperature and a steep decline in performance that cannot always be corrected.

This is obviously very individual, as you can see by what high level athletes choose to wear in Kona. A good rule of thumb is if the sun is shining and the air temperature is over 80* for the majority of the bike leg, you are probably best to leave it at home. Most races that have a high temperature of 80* or above will see this temperature later on in the afternoon, so make sure that you calculate what the temperature will be while you are ON the bike.

Follow these guidelines and you may find that you race a whole lot better in the heat than you thought you did!
